Stephanie Hughes
Steph Hughes is a Professor of Biochemistry and Genetics at the University of Otago, Director of the Otago Brain Health Research Centre and founding Director of the Otago RARITY (Research alliance for rare implementation of translational pathways) research theme. She is the New Zealand Representative for the International Brain Initiative, permanent NZ deputy chair on the EU ERDERA Board, co-chair of the New Zealand Neurological Foundation Scientific Advisory Committee and board member for the Otago Brain Injury Association.
Steph’s research focuses on CLN1, 5 and 6 Batten disease, funded by both national and international agencies and support groups. She has strong links with Batten disease families, clinicians and researchers throughout the world and is delighted to chair of the upcoming International Batten disease congress being held on the Sunshine coast in Oct 2025.
